Trial by Fire: My Introduction to Rabbits

Long before the existence of The Bunny Basement, I was interested in having a furry friend of my own. After lots of research, a bunny seemed like a great fit into my lifestyle. I lived in an apartment at the time so a smaller pet that was quiet seemed ideal. I got on the internet and some of the first posts that came up were Craigslist. I drove to Colorado Springs, Colorado and picked Voodoo out of a box of 2 black bunnies from a little girl. He was very small about the size of a hamster.

After about a day of him being at my house, he didn't seem as energetic as he was and seemed sort of sleepy. I didn't know anything about rabbits but I knew this wasn't right. I got online to find a vet and found that I couldn't just go to a vet that saw cats and dogs. I needed an exotic vet, and not every exotic vet cared for rabbits. I eventually found a vet that saw rabbits. They told me that Voodoo was likely around 3-4 weeks old, too young to be away from his mother. I had to supplement his feedings with goats milk and watch him very closely, as baby rabbits are very fragile. This period was very stressful, but we both survived!

This experience early in my days with rabbits taught me so much so quickly and why it is important to adopt all pets from a rescue. Rabbits are often sold before they should be because they are docile and as cute as can be. At eight weeks old, baby rabbits don't really look like babies any more and are getting into everything which is less appealing. Rescues can help determine if a bunny is right for your home and lifestyle before committing to a pet rabbit that can live ten years or older. Rabbit rescues like The Bunny Basement ensure that the rabbit you go home with is healthy, spayed or neutered, and ready for a new family.
